该项纵向研究纳入了69例中度至重度慢性阻塞性肺病患者，在一年中最热的日子进行研究。参与者完成一份问卷（呼吸困难、咳嗽和痰量表(BCSS)）来评价他们的呼吸道症状，记录管理COPD相关症状时急救吸入器的使用情况，通过日常的肺功能测试评估患者的肺功能。

除了这些数据，McCormack和同事还评估了室外温度、两种空气污染物（在患者家中发现的，包括细颗粒物(PM2.5)和二氧化氮（NO2））。

结果表明，随着室内温度的上升，患者的BCSS评分和急救吸入器的使用增加。此外，高水平的PM2.5和NO2强化提高了室内温度对患者症状的影响。由高室内温度引起的症状是立竿见影的，并可以持续两天。

不过研究者没有发现肺功能与室内温度、PM2.5和NO2的联系。

研究者称：优化室内气候、减少室内污染，或许是改善慢性阻塞性肺病患者健康结果的一个潜在的途径。
