饮食与肠易激综合征的关系,曾有过较多研究,也存在不少争议，薄荷油是否有效目前未知。

肠易激综合征（irritable bowel syndrome，IBS）是一组持续或间歇发作，以腹痛、腹胀、排便习惯和（或）大便性状改变为临床表现，而缺乏胃肠道结构和生化异常的肠道功能紊乱性疾病，目前，治疗IBS 的药物很有限。薄荷油是一种广泛使用的非处方草药补充剂和食品添加剂，在美国用于治疗常见的胃肠道症状，并经常用于治疗 IBS。薄荷油的活性成分是L-薄荷醇，可以通过拮抗胃肠道中的钙离子通道而有解痉的特性。本研究旨在比较薄荷油与安慰剂在缓解 IBS 症状方面的效果。

研究人员在美国一个医疗中心进行的一项为期6周的随机、双盲、安慰剂对照试验中，根据 IBS 严重程度评分系统 (IBS -SSS 评分≥175），以 1:2 的比例随机分配患者接受肠溶薄荷油 180 mg，3次/天，或接受安慰剂治疗。主要观察结果是 IBS-SSS 评分从基线到 6 周终点的平均变化程度。

研究结果显示薄荷油组的和安慰剂组的改善程度组间差异无统计学意义 (90 vs 100.3,P= 0.97）。同时，两组患者都报告了次要终点的显着改善。薄荷油和安慰剂组之间的腹部疼痛反应无显着差异：小肠释放薄荷油组的62位患者中有29位有反应，其中63位患者中有26位回肠结肠释放薄荷油组有缓解，安慰剂组64例患者中有22例有缓解（34.4％）。总体而言没有发现总体缓解之间的差异（P= 0.351）。

本项研究证实：薄荷油和安慰剂均显示出对 IBS 症状具有临床意义的改善。然而，各组之间没有显着差异。因此需要进一步的大型、严格的试验来评估薄荷油对 IBS 治疗的作用。
