目前，重点集中放在目前， 载脂蛋白 A1(apoA1)， 高密度脂蛋白 (HDL) 的主要成分，好的胆固醇和存在于低密度脂蛋白 (LDL) 或“坏”胆固醇中的载脂蛋白 B。

但是，研究人员首次使用质谱分析法来测量一组空前的载脂蛋白，发现另一组载脂蛋白可能补充好胆固醇和坏胆固醇的路标： apoE，apoC2 apoC3。这些载脂蛋白与低密度脂蛋白 (VLDL)， 与另一组被称为甘油三酯的脂肪显示了与心脑血管疾病极大地关系。

这些发现可以改善全世界心脑血管疾病的诊断。
