我们都知道，Prox1基因在胚胎发育过程中扮演着重要的角色，日前，一项刊登在国际杂志Nature Communications上的研究报告中，来自芬兰的研究人员通过研究发现，Prox1基因或许对于骨骼肌干细胞的分化也非常关键。骨骼肌不仅对于运动非常重要，而且对于整个机体新陈代谢的调节也很关键，在机体损伤之后肌肉有着强大的能力进行再生，同时还能够不断适应运动训练。

此前研究中，研究人员通过研究发现，Prox1基因或许也有黑暗的一面，比如其在结直肠癌的发生过程中扮演着重要的作用。如今研究者发现，名为卫星细胞的骨骼肌干细胞同样能够表达Prox1基因，而且当该基因处于活化状态时卫星细胞能够分化为肌肉纤维。

研究者指出，我们在成年人的慢肌纤维中也能够发现Prox1基因的表达，机体中的慢肌纤维具有良好的耐力和高度的代谢活性，成人机体中大约有一半的骨骼肌都是慢肌纤维肌肉，研究者Kivela说道，在小鼠机体中，Prox1基因能够将快肌纤维转换为慢肌纤维，而剔除Prox1基因则会增加快肌纤维基因的活性。

最后研究者表示，本文研究阐明了Prox1基因在卫星细胞分化分化及慢肌纤维维护过程中扮演的重要角色，为后期深入研究人类肌肉和代谢疾病，比如2型糖尿病等疾病的发病机制提供了新的研究线索，研究者Kivela说道，在人类机体中，Prox1基因的多态性和2型糖尿病发病风险增加直接相关。
