流感疫苗可以引发强烈但短时间的抗体反应，但这种反应无法中和不包含在疫苗成分中的病毒株。因此，一旦出现疫苗无法克制的新流感病毒比如2009年的H1N1病毒流行，很可能引起广泛传播并造成潜在的严重后果。而在缺少特定病毒疫苗的条件下，为抵抗自然感染后疾病治疗而产生的 CD8+T 免疫细胞寿命较长、具有交叉反应的特点，但其所扮演的角色之前一直不清楚。

Ajit Lalvani等人分析了感染2009年 pH1N1 病毒的病人体内 CD8+T 免疫细胞的反应发现，在缺乏 pH1N1 中和抗体的条件下，针对受高度保护病毒多肽的现存 CD8+T 免疫细胞与症状严重程度减轻以及 pH1N1 的鼻脱落有关。研究结论认为新流感疫苗应该加强交叉反应性 CD8+T 免疫细胞的研发作为抗体生产的一种补充，以抵抗今后因为流行病暴发比如年度季节性流感而引发的各类疾病。
