由细粒棘球绦虫所引起的包虫病是人畜共患的寄生虫病。目前，全球至少有5000万人感染这种寄生虫病。3年前，在国家“973”计划、国家自然科学基金委和上海市科委的支持下，国家人类基因组南方研究中心和新疆医科大学第一附属医院共同开展了题为“细粒棘球绦虫基因组研究计划”的项目研究。

科研人员对细粒棘球绦虫基因组进行了测序和分析，获得了该寄生虫的基因组序列草图，该草图包含151.6 Mb的序列和11325个基因。通过与其他绦虫物种基因组序列进行比较，科研人员发现，细粒棘球绦虫获得了包括EgAgB家族在内的一系列基因，细粒棘球绦虫通过分泌这些基因的产物干扰并改变了宿主免疫反应，从而感染和适应大量的哺乳动物物种，使之成为其中间宿主。

在研究中，科研人员首次揭示了细粒棘球绦虫独特的胆酸盐调控双向发育的遗传基础，提供了关于细粒棘球绦虫生物学、发育、分化、进化和宿主互作等方面的一些新认识，并鉴别出了一些药物和疫苗靶点，有可能推动开发包虫病干预新手段。

《自然·遗传学》杂志论文审稿人认为，该研究工作为包虫病的诊断试剂、治疗药物和预防疫苗研制提供了一个基本的全基因组信息平台，对提高包虫病的诊断和治疗水平，控制包虫病有积极意义。
