通过测序身高正常但具有一个非常小的头部尺寸个体的基因组,这些个体KATNB1基因有突变,研究表明该基因对于正常人类大脑发育是很重要的。小头畸形是常与神经发育障碍相关的疾病。出生时测量计算宝宝的头围,如果比平均水平要小,婴儿被诊断小头畸形。

小头畸形可能源于会导致大脑妊娠中胎儿大脑异常生长或出生后婴儿大脑退行性过程的各种因素。在一般情况下,小头畸形的个体预期寿命降低,由于其往往与脑功能相关,后者常与精神发育迟滞降低相关。

该小组还进行了进一步实验以确定KATNB1的功能,其作用的确切模式在人类中是未知的。使用专门设计缺乏这种基因的有机体,他们意识到KATNB1对于大脑达到其正确的大小是至关重要的。

没有这种基因的斑马鱼和小鼠胚胎不能存活到一定阶段,脑和头部的大小显著减少。他们的研究结果发表在Neuron杂志上。

在出生前或出生时测序和筛选该特定基因,也可能有助于检测一般人群中将来谁会有神经认知问题。Reversade博士说:我们将继续寻求对大脑发育很重要的其他基因。
