该项目首席研究人员格雷格·汉农(Greg Hannon)表示,“我们希望制作交互式、逼真的3D肿瘤示意图,科学家在虚拟现实环境中可以‘走进’肿瘤,对其细节进行研究。”

TechCrunch表示,肿瘤——首先从乳腺癌开始,将首先被切成极薄的切片,然后对这些切片进行成像和分析,直至对每个细胞的基因组成进行分析。全部切片将组装成3D模型,研究人员可以在虚拟现实环境中进行研究和实验。

当然,肿瘤3D扫描项目此前已经存在,但剑桥大学的新项目能提供更详尽的细节和交互性。

汉农在一段视频中说,“我认为,在未来人们理解癌症和生物体发育方面,这一项目将处于前沿地位。所有生物发育都以3D方式进行,迄今为止,现有技术尚不能破解细胞间通信的秘密。”
