研究者使用基于人群的健康调查汇总分析的数据，对30年来心脏危险因素的死亡负担进行评估。结果显示，在2010年，高血压是全球各个地区心血管病、慢性肾脏病和糖尿病所致死亡的首要危险因素，超过40%的上述疾病所致死亡归因于高血压，体质指数(BMI)大和高血糖各导致约15%死亡，高胆固醇则导致超过10%的死亡。2010年，63%的上述疾病所致死亡归因于这4种代谢危险因素的综合效应，而在1980年这一比例为67%。


从1980年到2010年，高BMI和高血糖的死亡负担几乎翻倍。具体到国家，归因于这4种危险因素综合效应的心血管病、慢性肾脏病和糖尿病死亡率在白俄罗斯和哈萨克斯坦等中低收入国家远高于日本、法国和新加坡等高收入国家。
