研究人员分析了来自San Juan超重成人纵向研究的870名超重/肥胖无糖成人，年龄为40-65岁。使用稳态模型评估IR（HOMA-IR）指数评估的基线IR分为三分位数。在颊和舌侧位置评估BOP，在每个牙齿六个位点评估PPD。使用负二项回归来评估校正了基线年龄，性别，吸烟状况，饮酒量，受教育程度，体育锻炼，腰围，平均斑块指数和BOP部位基线数的口腔炎症风险比（RR），或PPD≥4mm的齿数和BOP。在597名参与者的子样本中也评估了血清TNF-α和脂联素三分位数对IR-口腔炎症关联的潜在影响。

结果显示，基线时HOMA-IR最高三分位数的参与者，其BOP [RR = 1.19,95％置信区间（CI）：1.03-1.36]和PPD≥4mm和BOP的牙数（RR = 1.39,95％置信区间：1.09 - 1.78），明显高于下两个HOMA-IR三分位组中的个体。TNF-α和脂联素都不会影响这些关联。

综上所述，该研究结果表明，IR可用于预测该人群中的牙龈/牙周炎症。
