一项英国和澳大利亚联合研究显示，在长病程的1型糖尿病患者中，提高低血糖意识、防止反复发生严重低血糖事件是可以实现的。 研究纳入96例1型糖尿病患者，平均病程29年。研究者对比了胰岛素泵与每日多次注射胰岛素、实时持续血糖监测与传统自我血糖监测对改善低血糖意识的影响。与基线相比，随访24周时患者发生低血糖的时间明显缩短，出现严重低血糖的次数降低。组间分析显示不同方法效果相似，使用胰岛素泵的患者满意度
