称为 ISG 修饰的信号在过去被主要视为抗病毒信号，尽管一些研究显示其也可被其它刺激如缺氧，衰老或癌症激活。“在这些情况下，外泌体的分泌，以及细胞之间的交流，可以受到这种修饰的影响，”Carolina Villarroya 博士解释说。

研究团队致力于解码控制外泌体分泌的过程并探索其潜在的生物医学应用价值。 正如 Sánchez-Madrid 博士所说，“作为细胞间通讯的信使者，外泌体是基因治疗， 疫苗设计和免疫治疗的潜在工具。 一些临床试验正在进行，以评估使用这种方法的新治疗。”

Nature Communications 的文章描述了抗病毒信号如何激活参与外泌体降解的蛋白质的程序降解。 据 Villarroya 说，这个信号标记位于核内体的特定蛋白质，而核内体是外泌体形成的地方。这个标记重定向这些蛋白质的降解途径，并阻止外泌体的分泌。Sánchez-Madrid 指出，这种新机制通过激活自身蛋白质的降解来保护自身免受感染，也可以被外来因子用于其繁殖。
