作者招募了17位孤立性髌骨骨关节炎患者，13位合并髌骨及胫骨骨关节炎的患者以及21位以年龄配对的健康对照。作者检测了受试者在上下楼梯中的关节运动学以及地面反作用力。上下楼梯过程中的速度由受试者自我控制。作者采用骨骼肌计算机模型来反映下肢肌力以及髌骨关节反作用力，以上参数均通过方差分析的统计学方法进行组间比较。
研究发现，患有孤立性髌骨骨关节炎以及合并有髌骨、胫骨骨关节炎的受试者在上下楼梯运动中膝关节的伸展度、股四头肌肌力以及髌骨关节反作用力均低于各自的健康对照，骨盆前倾角度则高于健康对照。相较于健康对照，骨关节炎患者在上楼梯过程中展现了更大的臀部屈曲度，在下楼梯过程中则出现较小的膝关节屈曲角度以及较弱的臀外展肌肌力。而以上参数在两组骨关节炎受试者之前无显著性差异。

研究结果表明，相较于健康对照来说，髌骨关节炎患者在在下楼梯活动中展现出了较小的髌骨关节反作用力、较小的膝关节伸展度以及较弱的股四头肌肌力。
