该研究在病理甲状旁腺细胞中，分别通过批量孵化和Fura-2确定咖啡因对PTH分泌和Ca2+水平的影响。在正常和甲状旁腺瘤组织中通过蛋白印迹法和免疫组织化学法研究蛋白表达。通过PCR定量腺苷受体A1（ADORA1）和A2（ADORA2）、以及PTH基因表达的改变，通过抗体分析法分析细胞内cAMP水平和蛋白激酶A（PKA）活性。

该研究结果表明，咖啡因的生理浓度从1到50uM，并且发现咖啡因50uM咖啡因可导致PTH分泌和PTH基因表达显著下降。这个下降的发生与细胞内cAMP水平、PKA活性和ADORA1基因表达的下降相平行，暗示一个可能的因果关系。即使高浓度的咖啡因也没有影响细胞内Ca2+的水平。蛋白表达证明了咖啡因的两个主要靶点–ADORA1和ADORA2A。

该研究发现，在人类甲状旁腺细胞中，生理性高剂量咖啡因抑制PTH分泌可能是由于细胞内cAMP水平的下降。这个发现证明咖啡因与甲状旁腺细胞功能之间的功能链接。
