       在这项研究中，意大利马里奥内格里药理研究所的Carlo La Vecchia博士及其同事采用欧盟1970~2007年的癌症死亡数据来计算各年的死亡率并确定趋势，进而预测2012年的死亡率。
 
       乳腺癌死亡是大部分欧洲国家女性癌症死亡的主要原因。研究人员预计，2012年乳腺癌死亡率为14.9例/100,000名女性，将较2007年降低9%。在50 岁以下女性中，死亡率为6.3例/100,000人，相对2007年的降幅将为13%。总体而言，2012年将有约717,398名男性和565,703 名女性死于癌症，年龄标准化死亡率分别为139例/100,000名男性和85例/100,000名女性。与2007年相比，男性的胃癌、肺癌、前列腺癌、结直肠癌和白血病死亡率以及女性的胃癌、子宫癌、结直肠癌、乳腺癌和白血病死亡率均已显著降低。癌症死亡率的降低可归因于吸烟率(尤其是在男性中)的降低以及检测和治疗的改善。
 
       然而，欧洲各国的癌症死亡率趋势不同。另外，不同类型癌症的死亡率趋势也不相同。与2007年相比，女性肺癌死亡率增加了7%，总死亡率为13.44例死亡/100,000名女性。预计2012年英国女性的肺癌死亡率将明显增至21.4例/100,000名女性，较去年有所增加。预计2012年波兰女性的肺癌死亡率为16.9例/100,000名女性。在英国和波兰，每年死于肺癌的女性多于死于乳腺癌的女性。尽管波兰一些癌症的死亡率出现降低，但与其他欧洲国家相比仍较高。在欧洲，虽然调查已发现吸烟率这一已知胰腺癌重要危险因素已出现降低，但总体上欧洲男性和女性的胰腺癌死亡率均有所增加，具体原因尚不清楚。男性和女性的胰腺癌死亡率已分别从2007年的7.86例增至8.01例/100,000名男性和从5.24例增至5.38例/100,000名女性。尽管肥胖、体力活动及月经和生殖因素等方面存在一些不利趋势，但乳腺癌死亡率仍出现了降低。另外，在未进行常规筛查的年轻女性中观察到的降幅最明显，表明治疗的改善在降低死亡率方面起的作用最大。尽管在女性中观察到胰腺癌和肺癌增加趋势，但欧洲癌症死亡率的降幅可能已超过欧盟委员会2003年设定的到2015年癌症死亡率降低15%的目标。
