研究人员将2014年10月1日以后实验室确诊的HIV感染的新病例确定为疫情爆发相关病例进行分析，患者居住在印第安纳州斯科特县，或患者与HIV患者共用注射器或性伴侣为HIV患者。系统分析感染病例的HIV聚合酶（POL）序列，并确定HIV感染相关的危险因素。

2014年11月18日至2015年11月1日，共有181名患者被诊断为HIV感染。其中，87.8%的患者注射过处方阿片类药物羟吗啡酮缓释制剂，92.3%的患者合并感染丙型肝炎病毒。系统分析确定159名患者为HIV 1型pol基因序列，其中157名（98.7%）患者存在高度相关的序列。接触追踪调查确定536名与HIV患者接触的人群，其中468人（87.3%）被具体定位，评估了其HIV感染的风险，且进行了HIV测试，如果确定感染了HIV则进行护理。与HIV患者共用注射器的人群与患者接触的次数与HIV感染的风险显著相关。针对这一疫情，2015年3月26日美国宣布了一个突发公共卫生事件，并在印地安那州首次建立了注射器服务计划。

总而言之，印第安纳州注射药物的人群中，氧吗啡酮缓释剂的注射导致了HIV的引入和迅速传播。
