微小RNA病毒科要比任何其他的病毒科导致更为常见的人类感染,并且导致普通感冒和脊髓灰质炎等疾病。借助于一组巧妙的单倍体遗传筛选实验,论文第一作者Jacqueline Staring和合作者们针对导致微小RNA病毒感染它们的人类宿主细胞的分子过程获得新的认识。抑制PLA2G16(一种细胞中的药物可靶向的酶)会让微小RNA病毒颗粒不能逃避正常情形下与细菌感染相关联的一种清除机制。在动物体内,让这种酶失活,会让它们免受微小RNA病毒感染,同时保持健康和生育力。

Brummelkamp博士解释道,“这些发现提示着PLA2G16能够被用来作为微小RNA病毒导致的疾病的一种新的抗病毒靶标。再者,鉴于这样的药物会靶向一种宿主因子而不是一种病毒蛋白,因此这种病毒就很难产生药物耐药性。”

Haplogen公司拥有利用PLA2G16抵抗病毒感染的专有权。在2012年11月宣布的与Evotec公司的合作中,它已开发出新的抑制剂化合物。它期待这些化合物在2017年进入临床前开发。
