这个新的测试提供了一个潜在的生物标志物，可能让医生更早期识别和诊断这些疾病。在这项研究中，研究人员从20名阿尔茨海默氏症患者，16名帕金森氏病患者和17名其他原因引起的痴呆患者，以及在同一年龄段的12名健康人中获得皮肤活检。他们测试了这些皮肤样本，看看是否能发现特定类型蛋白（即能预示一个人有老年痴呆症或帕金森氏的蛋白）的改变。

相比于健康患者和那些其它原因引起的痴呆症，那些同时有阿尔茨海默氏症和帕金森氏的患者有7倍更高水平的tau蛋白。与健康对照组相比，帕金森氏患者也有α-突触核蛋白蛋白质8倍高的水平。值得注意的是虽然结果是令人兴奋的，但需要更多的研究来证实这些结果。
