在当前工业化社会中,人体肠道细菌营养不足会导致缺乏一种有益的细菌,这可能会影响免疫和新陈代谢健康。大多数西方人消耗的食用纤维仅是膳食指南推荐量的一半,营养学家将这称为“纤维缺口”,而膳食纤维是肠道细菌所需营养的主要来源。

“提高食用纤维摄入的观点并不新颖,但微生物菌群消耗则为低纤维西方饮食增加了新视角。”该研究负责人Jens Walter说,“有很多流行病学证据显示,纤维是有益的。而且富含食用纤维的食物是美国食品药品监督管理局认可的针对结肠癌和冠心病的推荐食物。”在相关文章中,研究人员建议科学家、食品生产商、政策制定者和监管人员齐心协力解决纤维缺口问题。他们还强调,进行针对不同纤维类型和富含纤维食物在微生物群落产出方面的临床评估是必要的。
