哈佛大学(Harvard University)医学院的研究人员对穴居的丽脂鲤(Astyanax mexicanus)的研究发现，它们在胰岛素受体中携带一种突变可以让它们对胰岛素产生抗性。这会导致这些穴居鱼出现高血糖，并且体重比在河里生存的同类更高。

在水底洞穴中生存的动物需要面对不定期出现食物缺乏的挑战，因此它们体内的新陈代谢机制也出现了相应的进化。哈佛大学(Harvard University)医学院的研究人员对穴居的丽脂鲤(Astyanax mexicanus)的研究发现，它们在胰岛素受体中携带一种突变可以让它们对胰岛素产生抗性。这会导致这些穴居鱼出现高血糖，并且体重比在河里生存的同类更高。更高的体重可能是应对不定期食物缺乏的一种策略。在人类中，同样的胰岛素受体基因突变会导致严重胰岛素抗性和寿命下降。但是这种穴居鱼的寿命与在水面生存的同类没有差别。在这些血糖水平升高的穴居鱼体内也没有发现通常与糖尿病风险相关的蛋白糖化现象。这意味着这些穴居鱼可能进化出了其它补偿机制来避免高血糖造成的负面影响。这项研究表明，这种穴居鱼可能成为糖尿病研究的最新模型，用于发掘对抗高血糖负面影响的生理机制。
