研究者试图确定门诊抑郁患者的与工作效率相关的基线临床特征和社会人口学特征，并评估治疗对其工作效率的影响。研究共招募了1928名年龄在18-75岁的抑郁患者，参与者需事先完成工作效率与活动障碍量表，每日服用西酞普兰20-40mg，进行序贯治疗缓解抑郁研究。经初始足量抗抑郁药试验（阶段1）后未缓解的患者，可更换为舍曲林、安非他酮缓释剂、文拉法辛缓释剂、安非他酮或丁螺环酮缓释剂加增强剂（阶段2）。研究评估了参与者与基线工作效率相关的临床和社会人口学特征、治疗转归及工作效率随时间的改变。

参与者的教育程度、基线抑郁程度、忧郁症的、非典型的及复发的抑郁症亚型均与工作效率低下独立相关。第一治疗阶段中，在一部分工作效率通过抑郁症状改善儿提高，尽管，这些发现并没有被第二阶段的转归验证；工作障碍的治愈与缓解间无显著联系；当纳入多重归因对丢失数据进行处理后，研究结果在很大程度上得到了证实，在此附加评估中发现严重的工作效率损害与较高的焦虑抑郁水平相关。
