慢性淋巴细胞白血病(Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, CLL)是一种难以治愈的癌症，该疾病在不同患者人群中的发展程度并不相同，有些患者在被诊断出CLL后需要立刻进行治疗，然而有些患者即便在没有疗法治疗的情况下也可以存活很长时间。因此鉴别出和CLL预后乐观或不良的分子特性对于进行有效的治疗至关重要。

这项研究中研究人员对8500多名CLL病人的样本进行分析，这些患者样本基于样本白细胞中相似B细胞受体的表达被分为很多亚群，当研究人员对不同亚群样本进行研究时发现了明显的关联性；即同一个特殊亚群中的病人会遵循相同的临床过程，这同其它亚群的病人是并不相同的，比如2号亚群病人表现出疾病的恶化过程，平均两年进行一次治疗；而另一方面对于4号亚群病人来讲虽患病但并无感觉，而且也并不需要治疗。

基于类似的B细胞受体及其它的预后标志物对不同CLL病人进行分类或许可以帮助研究人员更加精确地预测不同亚群CLL病人的预后情况，并且增加鉴别出高风险患病个体的可能性。当然由于个人的医疗和心理原因，能够确定最不需要治疗的患者群体也非常重要，尤其是对于那些年轻的患病个体，其需要确定自身疾病是否真的需要进行治疗。
