尽管诊断技术近年来有了长足的发展，但在没有配备检测设备的偏远地区许多急性髓性白血病(AML)病例仍未得到充分诊断。我们在此提出假设，带有散点图和标记的自动化细胞指数可能有助于快速有效地筛查AML。

研究人员采用Coulter LH 780自动分析仪对100个新生AML样本的细胞群数据(CPD)参数进行分析，并与100个年龄匹配的对照组进行比较。参数也分别与100例中性粒细胞增多症和50例单核细胞增多症的反应性病例进行了比较。同时，系统‐生成的标志和散点图模式也进行了分析。

通过比较AML病例和正常对照组; AML FAB M2，M3，M4与反应性中性白细胞增多症; 以及AML FAB M4，M5与反应性单核细胞增多症。从所有比较组中选择重要参数。使用适当的统计工具，计算这些参数的截止值，并能够筛选出具有94％灵敏度和95％特异性的AML病例。使用两个最重要的参数产生三个统计方程，其将灵敏度提高至98％，特异性提高至99％。设计了五种假设的散点图模式，并根据AML的FAB类别进行分类。最常见的模式是在AML中选择的，56％的病例中都有这种模式。结合这些模式和标志与CPD参数分析输出。无论是单独的CPD，还是以统计方程的形式，以及散点图和标记，都可以为AML的初步诊断提供快速和经济的工具。
