Wilhelm Röntgen于1895年发现X射线,引领了医学和工业放射学的许多重大进步。但是,也许令人惊讶的是,3D物体的高分辨率X射线成像仍然是一个令人望而生畏的挑战。Ou等人报告了一个解决这个问题的潜在方案,利用纳米晶体可以捕获X射线的能量数周。

发光材料是X射线传感的关键工具,含镧系荧光粉已被广泛应用于各个领域,包括生物检测和纳米测温仪。其中一些荧光粉可以在光照射后发光几秒钟、几分钟甚至几个小时。

这种持久发光的起源一直存在争议,但人们的共识是,荧光粉晶格中的缺损通过捕获辐射产生的激发载流子发挥了很大作用。在合成传统的含镧系荧光粉的过程中,通过将其加热到高温(有时高达1,700 °C),会产生缺损。然而,这种处理会产生大颗粒的荧光粉,这不适合制造柔性的、大面积的X射线探测器。

Ou等人报道含有镧系元素的纳米晶体可以将X射线辐射产生的激发载流子储存在晶格中的缺陷中数周。为了解释这一行为,作者提出,晶格中的氟离子可以通过与X射线光子的碰撞而移位,这会在过去离子所在的位置产生空位,氟离子会插入到通常空置的位置。空位与间隙配对,在晶格中产生不规则的Frenkel缺损。

作者的量子力学计算表明,Frenkel缺损在纳米晶体中充当电荷载流子的陷阱,而且陷阱的深度不同(也就是说,被捕获的电荷载流子需要逃逸的能量大小各不相同)。然而,浅陷阱中载流子的能量可以较轻松地、缓慢地逃逸并迁移到晶格中的镧系离子中。这一过程与缺损的自我修复同时发生。研究人员发现,这种能量迁移产生的发光可持续30天以上。这种持久性对于应用是潜在有用的,因为与以前使用的荧光粉相比,它延长了潜像被转换成电信号用于分析之前可以存储在检测器中的时间段。

Ou和他的同事们利用这些持久发光的纳米晶体制造了用于高分辨率3D照相的柔性X射线探测器,开发了一种他们称为X射线发光扩展成像(XR-LEI)的新技术。探测器由一片嵌入纳米晶体的有机硅聚合物组成。将薄片包裹在要成像的3D对象周围,然后用X射线照射,载流子被困在纳米晶体中的Frenkel缺损中,这些缺损位于探测器中X射线通过的区域,从而产生剩余X射线束的潜像,然后移除探测器并将其加热到80°C,当捕获的电荷载流子的能量被刺激迁移到镧系离子时,潜像迅速转化为发光,生成的图像只需使用数码相机或智能手机即可记录下来。

作者通过用它将弯曲电路板的内部结构可视化,展示了他们的技术的能力。

他们发现,当探测器应用于被检测物体时,如果将探测器拉伸,图像的分辨率可以提高。通过将纳米晶体嵌入到高度可伸展的硅胶中,作者获得了大约25微米的分辨率。这比使用传统平板探测器(通常为100微米)所能达到的分辨率高得多。

不过在XR-LEI可以转化为医疗和工业应用之前,需要解决几个问题。探测器的X射线灵敏度还有改进的空间,因为只有少量的纳米颗粒(按重量计约为2%)被掺入硅胶片中。更根本的是,还需要进一步研究准确了解Frenkel缺损如何影响发光,但识别X射线辐射形成的Frenkel缺损是困难的。时间分辨X射线吸收光谱和固态核磁共振光谱等先进技术,可以用来直接探测导致缺损形成的氟离子位置的变化。然而,Ou等人提出的见解开辟了一条很有前途的研究途径,可能会为非侵入性医学放射学和纳米电子检查提供一种新的方法
