酒糟鼻相关的皮肤炎症是引起眼表疾病的常见原因之一，目前尚无治疗眼酒糟鼻的特效药物。该研究是为了验证有/无酒糟鼻患者的眼睑皮肤的细胞内信号活动是否存在差异。

该观察对比性案例包括21名在2013年与2014年接受过一次睑外翻手术的患者（18名为酒糟鼻患者，13名为对照患者）。24例石蜡包埋标本来自奥尔巴尼医学中心（随机选取12例酒糟鼻患者，12例对照患者标本）。利用人磷酸激酶蛋白质组分析方法、蛋白质电泳和/或免疫组化方法分析下眼睑外翻手术中选择性活检标本的病理结果。

酒糟鼻患者的样本检测结果显示磷酸化（活性）P38和ERK激酶水平升高，且磷酸化蛋白主要分布于受累的眼睑表皮。

这一发现为眼酒糟鼻和其他类型的酒糟鼻提供了一种新的潜在治疗靶点，是否P38和ERK激活与眼酒糟鼻有因果关联，仍需要进一步的试验进行验证。受累皮肤部位的角质形成细胞选择性激活的现象表明局部通道抑制方法可能是一种治疗眼酒糟鼻引起的眼表损伤的有效治疗手段。
