在新模型中,人类造血干细胞在没有做任何处理的情况下可以扩大和分化成各种类型的血细胞。固有免疫系统的细胞在“类人化”老鼠体内不会被发现所以可以有效的遗传给下一代。更有意义的是与先前的小鼠模型相比干细胞可以在小鼠体内长期存在,这下结果发表在 Cell Stem Cell 杂志上。

Claudia Waskow的团队使用技巧来达到最优的干细胞移植,自然发生突变的小鼠KIT受体是因为缺乏免疫系统功能。这样他们可以绕过造血干细胞移植的两大障碍:被接受者的免疫系统所拒绝和在受者的骨髓中输入供者干细胞缺乏自由的niches。niches通常被提供放射治疗,称之为条件作用,它损害和耗尽了内源性干细胞,从而为输入的人类细胞释放空间。

然而,放射对许多类型的细胞都是有害的,并且可能导致强烈的副作用。新的小鼠模型的KIT突变损害了受体干细胞区室,这样内源性干细胞很容易被带有功能性的KIT受体的人类捐赠干细胞所替代。这个替换非常有效以至于辐射可以完全被忽略,并且允许在生理环境中对人类血液学进行研究开发。该模型可用于研究人类血液和免疫系统疾病或测试新的治疗方案。
