牛皮癣是一种免疫系统炎症疾病，皮肤细胞繁殖速度比正常快，因此会引起红色斑块，银色鳞片，最常出现在头皮，膝盖，手肘，手和脚上，但也可以出现在背部，脸部，生殖器，指甲和其他地方。美国皮肤病学会估计牛皮癣影响着约750万美国人。

先前的研究已经证明牛皮癣及其并发症会增加很多慢性疾病的风险，如慢性肾脏疾病，糖尿病，心血管疾病，但是我们尚不了解牛皮癣的严重程度如何影响寿命，在这项研究中，研究人员使用一个叫做身体表面积(BSA)的度量，字面上讲就是测量身体覆盖的牛皮癣的百分比，参与者数据来自8760名银屑病患者，研究团队平均随访大约四年，在这段时间里，牛皮癣覆盖率超过10%的参与者中，每1000人平均有6.39人死亡，而少于这一比例的死亡率为每1000人3.24人。在调查了其他可能的影响因素之后，研究人员得出结论，身体覆盖率高出10%以上的牛皮癣患者死亡率增加了1.79倍。
