Tomas Lindahl、Paul Modrich和Aziz Sancar在DNA修复的酶机制方面做出了根本性和突破性的发现。

Lindahl证明了DNA本质上是一种不稳定的分子,即使在生理条件下也会发生破坏。根据这一观察发现,Lindahl发现了一组全新的DNA糖基化酶,并描述了它们在碱基切除修复中的作用。

Modrich将错配修复的领域从遗传学观察转变为生物化学上的细致了解,首先是细菌,然后是真核细胞。

Sancar将核苷酸切除修复的领域从细胞提取液中的遗传学和现象研究转变为对有关机制的详细分子学描述,首先是细菌,然后也进入真核细胞。Sancar还解释了光复活修复(第一种得到描述的DNA修复机制)的基础分子机制。
