研究人员 对年龄介于16～20岁的近24万瑞典男性的身高和体重进行了测量，并使用受试者的静脉血样本对一种炎症非特异性指标——红细胞沉降率进行了确定。

35年的随访期间，885名男性发生了结直肠癌。经多变量调整后，基线时体重超重(BMI：27.5至<30)或肥胖(BMI, 30及以上)的男性罹患结直肠癌的可能性是体重正常男性的二倍以上。基线时的高炎症状态与结直肠癌风险增高也是独立相关的。

这项研究的作者们倡导在这方面开展更多的研究，不过作出结论：他们的研究发现提示“结直肠癌与青少年期炎症具有不同程度的相关性，且青少年期的BMI与结直肠癌风险的相关性更大”。
