6月23号圣路易斯大学的科学家刊登在《癌症》（ Journal of Cancer）上的研究表明， 和水飞蓟素这两种具有药用特性的植物化合物混合使用时可以有效地治疗结肠癌。

姜黄素是香料姜黄中的活性成分，常用于一些咖喱菜肴当中，而水飞蓟素是奶蓟中的活性成分，现在已经广泛应用于治疗肝脏疾病的药物中。

研究人员和学生们在实验室中对结肠癌细胞模型进行了前期实验，圣路易斯大学生物医学实验室的副教授同时也是本研究的合作者Uthayashanker Ezekiel博士说：“我们首先使用姜黄素处理细胞，然后联合使用水飞蓟素后发现，这种组合要比单使用一种药物效果要好的多。植物化学成分的组合可以抑制结肠癌细胞的增殖和转移，癌细胞在首先使用姜黄素治疗之后，然后使用水飞蓟素进行干预，细胞的死亡率大大升高。

植物化学物质的组合治疗结肠癌的方法可能会替代化疗药物，同时也可以由于药物毒性对人体造成的副作用，Ezekiel博士说：“该研究还处于初级阶段，接下来我们会对此进行进一步更加深入的研究确定多种化合物成分的混合对于结肠癌的治疗是否是一种行之有效的方法，如果确认是有效的，那么我们就会据此研发出一些具有前景的药物来预防这种由于生活方式导致的癌症。”
下面的工作就是主要探究姜黄素和水飞蓟素共同作用的分子机制，通过对基因转录和表达及细胞的变化应用于动物模型中进行实验研究。

此外，因为高浓度的姜黄素和水飞蓟素可能对人体是有害的，所以在这方面我们还有很长的路要走，但是现在膳食中多添加一些含有姜黄素和水飞蓟素的食物是不会有害的。
