英国一项大型前瞻性研究探讨了女性初潮年龄与心脑血管疾病和高血压疾病风险之间的关系，结果表明，初潮年龄与血管疾病风险呈U型曲线关系，即初潮较早或较晚均与血管疾病风险增加相关。而初潮年龄与脑血管疾病和高血压疾病风险的关联性较弱。研究论文2014年12月15日在线发表于《循环》(Circulation)杂志。

该研究纳入了120万既往无心脏病、卒中或癌症的平均年龄为56岁的女性受试者，初潮年龄为13岁、≤10岁和≥17岁的比例分别为25%、4%和1%。经过11.6年的随访，因冠心病而首次入院或死亡、罹患脑血管疾病和高血压患者的例数分别为73378例、25426例和249426例。

利用Cox回归分析计算每一初潮年龄患者的血管疾病转归相对风险，结果呈U型相关，即与初潮年龄为13岁的女性相比，初潮年龄≤10岁和≥17 岁的CHD校正相对风险分别为1.27和1.23(P值均<0.0001)。

脑血管疾病和高血压与初潮年龄也呈U型相关，但与CHD的相关性相比，这两种疾病风险与初潮较早或较晚的相关性较小。
