2型糖尿病患者的胰岛炎症不仅影响β细胞功能和胰岛素产生，同时也影响α细胞的功能和胰高血糖素的产量。

胰岛炎症在2型糖尿病患者β细胞功能的衰竭中起重要作用。研究胰岛炎如何影响内分泌细胞将有助于寻找新的治疗靶点。新近发现IL-6可以调节胰岛α细胞的胰高血糖素分泌。IL-6属于gp130受体介导的细胞因子家族。最新的研究显示2型糖尿病患者的胰岛表达高水平的IL-6家族的细胞因子。在2型糖尿病的小鼠模型，也发现了多个IL-6家族细胞因子的过度表达。当部分敲除小鼠胰腺α细胞上的gp130受体后，小鼠对葡萄糖的耐受性提高，或免患2型糖尿病。这主要是因为去除gp130受体的α细胞恢复了正常的功能。因此，在2型糖尿病患者通过调控α细胞的gp130受体可减少过多的胰高血糖素分泌，从而成为调控血糖的手段。

在脂代谢信号通路中，磷脂酶A促进多种具有生物活性的脂类介质的产生，而这些脂类中间产物参与了多种生物学功能包括免疫反应、炎症细胞侵润，促进了β细胞的死亡。
