Aim of treatment is to normalise haemoglobin levels, normalise red cell indices, replenish iron stores, and address underlying cause.All patients should receive dietary advice.Iron replacement therapy should be begun promptly with oral iron therapy. However, intravenous iron therapy may be substituted when there is inadequate iron absorption, continued blood loss, or non-compliance or intolerance to oral iron therapy.
