The introduction and widespread use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for the treatment of HIVinfection has resulted in dramatic reductions in morbidity,mortality, and healthcare utilization [1 – 3] . Decreasingrates for opportunistic infections, including theneurological infections, have been reported. Diagnostictools for these neurological complications have beengreatly improved in the past 10 years. The therapeuticapproach to the neurologic diseases has been infl uencedby the success of HAART. However, HIV infection hasspread in new populations and the neurological complicationsare still frequent in patients who are not adequatelytreated and are immunosuppressed. Furthermore,recent studies show that patients who have been infectedand/or treated for many years are at risk for developingneurocognitive dysfunction. Alertness, together withneurological knowledge and expertise remain urgentlyneeded. Together, these developments form the mainreason for producing these new guidelines.The objective of the study was to provide neurologistsand others with evidence - based guidelines for the diagnosisand treatment of neurological complications ofHIV infection.
