This journal is dedicated to advancing the capabilities of engineering problem-solving through novel and real world applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related techniques. It recognises simultaneously that engineering problem-solving presents major challenges to AI research and development and that engineering will gain from discovering new and effective ways of applying human-based skills in formulating and solving problems. The journal offers, therefore, a unique forum for the exchange of information, views and results amongst workers with different backgrounds and different world views who share a common interest in engineering applications of AI. The scope of the journal covers the spectrum of engineering activities, including engineering research, planning, design, manufacturing, computer integrated manufacturing, construction, commissioning, maintenance, operation, transportation, distribution and services. It also includes engineering systems with built-in intelligence such as machine tools, automatically guided vehicles, robots, aircraft and printers, as well as appliances which are capable of exhibiting intelligent behaviour such as intelligent self-regulation, learning, negotiating, self-scheduling, self-diagnosing, self-repair, vision and speech recognition. All aspects of applied AI are covered, including knowledge-based systems, experts systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms, intelligent agents, reasoning, learning, natural language, fuzzy logic, pattern recognition, search and intelligent interfaces. In 1995, Artificial Intelligence in Engineering was adopted by the European Group for Structural Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence (EG-SEA-AI) as the official medium for publication of mature research.
