传统的血清分型方法对于检测多种血清型携带并不十分方便有效。但是在过去几十年中建立起来的新方法很少有数据来进行比较。为此,有必要进行国际性多中心试验来确证最好的研究肺炎链球菌携带的血清型分型方法。研究人员比较了二十种方法,用这些方法来检测81个制备好的样本,其中最好的五种方法被用来检测260个现场采集的样本。测定出检测方法的敏感度和阳性预测值(PPV)。实验结果表明,有15种方法在检测占多数的血清型有超过70%的敏感度,对于占少数的血清型,只用八种方法有这么高的敏感度。微阵列的敏感度和PPV都是最高的,分别为95.8%和93.7%。
 
此项研究表明,大多数方法可以检测占样本中多数的血清型。微阵列是效果最佳的检测方法。这对于临床检测肺炎链球菌携带有着重要的参考价值。
