研究人员发现抗癌药物TGF-β的抑制剂可以促进肝脏在严重损伤后的再生，这种新的治疗方法可能帮助肝损伤患者免于肝脏移植的痛苦。

如果肝脏损伤严重到器官无法再生，那么肝脏移植是唯一剩下的选择。英国大约有300名成人和儿童一直在等待肝脏移植，这也凸显出对替代治疗方案的迫切需求。

由爱丁堡大学和英国格拉斯哥癌症研究中心Beatson研究所的科学家领导的临床前研究发现，肝脏损伤会引发衰老过程，这种过程通常与衰老或慢性疾病有关。

通过使用TGF-β的抑制剂可以阻止衰老的进程，从而促进肝脏在损伤后的再生，并且提高患者的生存率。

医学研究委员会再生医学中心的Tom Bird博士说："我们的研究已经确定了一种可能治疗急性肝功能衰竭的方法，这可能可以使患者避免肝脏移植。这一发现对于患有急性肝功能衰竭的患者来说具有重大的意义。也将有助于为患有其他疾病的人释放捐赠者的肝脏，否则他们可能会在等待合适的器官时死亡。"

研究人员指出，在临床试验进一步评估该发现之前，还需要进一步的测试。但是这一发现将"为每年因肝功能衰竭的成千上万的患者带来了新的希望"。
