美国纳什维尔凡德比特大学医学中心的Jae Jeong Yang教授，及其同事研究了总的、特定类型的饮食脂肪与肺癌风险之间的关系，该团队利用Cox回归模型，对来自美国、欧洲和亚洲的10组前瞻性群组研究进行了汇总分析。

研究人员在经过平均9.4年的随访时间里，在1，445，850名参与者中确认了与肺癌相关的事件18，822例。总饱和脂肪摄入量高与增加的肺癌风险之间存在一定的联系（最高和最低风险比分别为：1.07和1.14，95%的置信区间分别为：1.00-1.15，1.07-1.22；P均<0.001）。相对于曾经/从不吸烟人群，这种联系在当前还在抽烟的人群中更加紧密（风险比1.23，95%置信区间1.13-1.35，P<0.001）。总饱和脂肪摄入量高，患鳞状细胞癌和小细胞癌症风险高于其他的组织学类型癌症（相对风险比分别为1.61和1.40，95%置信区间分别为1.38-1.88、1.17-1.67，P均<0.001）。相反的，多不饱和脂肪摄入量高，则肺癌风险降低（风险比0.92，95%置信区间0.87-0.98，P=0.2）。当饱和脂肪的能量有5%被多不饱和脂肪替代时，小细胞癌和鳞状细胞癌风险会降低16到17个百分点。

研究作者指出，“确认饮食脂肪的摄入（例如，用多不饱和脂肪替代饱和脂肪）可以降低癌症风险，尤其是降低那些吸烟者患鳞状细胞癌和小细胞癌的风险。”
