在成人中，肥胖是静脉血栓栓塞（VTE）众所周知的危险因素，而在儿童中，先前的研究获得了不同的结果。研究人员发现，青少年由BMI定义的肥胖可预测血栓形成。

威克森林大学儿科系助理教授，该研究的第一作者Elizabeth Halvorson称：“在过去二十年里儿童VTE发生率急剧增加，而美国的儿童肥胖率依旧很高，弄清楚两者间的关系是很重要的”。

因此这进行了一项回顾性研究，纳入了88名年龄2-18岁确诊VTE的患者。其中有33（37.5%）患者是肥胖患者，并且他们中的大多数人都知道肥胖是血栓的危险因素。

校正其他风险因素后，研究人员发现了肥胖与静脉血栓栓塞之间一个小的但是有统计学意义的关联；如果不及时治疗，可引起急性和慢性的健康问题。

Halvorson说：“虽然该研究只涉及了相当小的样本量，但是也明确了儿童肥胖和VTE间的关联。以后需要更多的研究验证该结论。”
