David J. Thouless,1934年出生于英国贝尔斯登,1958年从美国康奈尔大学获得博士学位。目前为美国华盛顿大学荣誉退休教授。

F. Duncan M. Haldane,1951年出生于英国伦敦,1978年从英国剑桥大学获得博士学位。目前为美国普林斯顿大学物理学教授。

J. Michael Kosterlitz,1942年出生于英国阿伯丁,1969年从英国牛津大学获得博士学位。目前为美国布朗大学物理学教授。

他们揭示了奇异物质的秘密

今年的获奖者打开了一扇通往未知世界的大门,在那里,物质可以呈现出奇怪的状态。他们利用高等数学方法研究了物质的一些特殊相或状态,比如超导体、超流体和磁性薄膜等。感谢他们出色的工作,如今,人类对物质的新奇相态的研究正在展开,材料科学和电子学的未来应用前景充满希望。

这三位科学家大胆地将拓扑学概念应用到物理学,对他们后来的发现起到了决定性作用。拓扑学是数学的一个分支,通常用来描述一些逐步变化的性质。三位科学家采用拓扑学作为研究工具,这一举动在当时让同行感到吃惊。在上世纪70年代早期,当时的理论认为超导现象和超流体现象不可能在薄层中产生,而Michael Kosterlitz 和David Thouless推翻了这一理论。他们证明了超导现象能够在低温下产生,并阐释了超导现象在较高温度下也能产生的机制——相变。

后来到了80年代,Thouless成功地解释了之前的一个实验,即超薄导电层中的电导系数可被精确测量到整数。他证明了这些整数在自然属性中处于拓扑状态。同时,Duncan Haldane发现,可以用拓扑学来理解某些材料中的小磁体链的性质。

现在,我们已经知道拓扑相有很多种,它们不仅存在于薄层和线状物,还存在于普通的三维材料中。过去十年里,这一领域的研究促进了凝聚态物理研究的前沿发展,人们不仅仅对拓扑材料能够在新一代电子器件和超导体中产生应用抱有希望,而且看好其在未来量子计算机方面的应用。此刻,许多研究人员仍在慢慢揭开奇异世界里物质的秘密,而这个奇异世界,是由今年的三位获奖者发现的。

瑞典斯德哥尔摩当地时间4日中午11时45分(北京时间4日17时45分),2016年诺贝尔物理学奖授予3位科学家:大卫·索利斯、邓肯·霍尔丹和迈克尔·科斯特利茨,以表彰他们在理论上发现了物质的拓扑相变和拓扑相。

戴维·索利斯研究凝聚态物理系统中的拓扑效应的著名专家,他曾与Kosterlity合作提出了拓扑相变中著名的Kosterlity-Thouless相变理论。

三位获奖者为我们打开了一个未知的世界,在这个未知就是证明物质可以以一种奇怪的状态存在,他们利用先进的数学方法来研究不同寻常物质状态,如超导体、超流体或磁膜等。由于他们的开创性工作,许多人希望未来这种研究将会对材料学和电子学产生革命性影响。决定性的发现是三位获奖者使用了物理拓扑的概念,拓扑是数学的一个分支。

什么是拓扑学

拓扑学(topology)是研究几何图形或空间在连续改变形状后还能保持不变的一些性质的学科。它只考虑物体间的位置关系而不考虑它们的形状和大小。拓扑英文名是Topology,直译是地志学,最早指研究地形、地貌相类似的有关学科。几何拓扑学是十九世纪形成的一门数学分支,它属于几何学的范畴。有关拓扑学的一些内容早在十八世纪就出现了。那时候发现一些孤立的问题,后来在拓扑学的形成中占着重要的地位。

拓扑学在生物医学中有应用吗?

这一幅度其实可以代表一切!其实,细胞内还有一种分子---拓扑异构酶(TOPO),这是肿瘤中最难对付的一种酶之一!也是细菌耐药的重要机制之一。

细胞大量细胞都具有拓扑结构,如内质网

内质网(endoplasmic reticulum)是遍布于整个细胞内部的膜状网,连接并围绕着细胞核。最近,美国加利福尼亚大学圣巴巴拉分校(UCSB)一个研究小组,用理论物理学的语言描述了内质网的几何结构。

大致上,内质网是由或多或少的、有规则的层状结构组成,层与层间隔均匀,彼此相连。这种结构也反映了它的功能:细胞内蛋白质合成的“工作场间”。以往人们以为,相邻的层与层之间是通过“虫洞”相连,也就是简单的管孔。去年,科学家才发现这种“虫洞”其实是一种复杂的螺旋结构,并以它的发现命名为“寺崎坡道”(Terasaki ramps)。这些螺旋坡道互相连接,一层层上升。论文第一作者、墨西哥国立自治大学的杰冒·古温说,一开始人们对此很惊讶,因为以往从未在生物膜中看到过这种螺旋几何形状。而且不同部分的内质网形状不同,除了类似停车库的平行层,还有管状网络和包围细胞核的球形界面。光滑的内质网膜由管装网构成,这些管装网是膜在“三岔口”的汇合处,这里也是合成脂质(或膜)的地方。新的脂质在光滑内质网中生产出来,在连接处不断积累,最终将连接的管子劈开。

在粗糙内质网中,平行面或堆叠层由寺崎螺旋坡道连接。在某些情况下,一条坡道是左手螺旋,则另一条是右手螺旋——停车库也是如此构造。“我们提出,堆叠层里的基本建筑构造不是单条螺旋坡道,而是类似‘停车库’的两条坡道,是一对双坡道,彼此形成镜像。”古温说,“这种结构体系能使能耗最小化,能与层状结构结合,而且还很稳定。”

在物理学中,把内质网各层连接起来的这些螺旋结构,称为“缺口”(defects)。 论文合著者、UCSB卡弗里理论物理学研究所副所长格莱格·哈博指出,这个词在物理学背景中并没有负面含义。“这表示一种特殊结构。内质网层的边缘是高度弯曲的,因为这些层要旋转、折弯,这样就形成了螺旋。”

弯曲形成了U形结构,就像半个管子。哈博和同事把微分几何原理应用到这种曲面膜上。“应用几何方法我们以特定的方式分离了管网的一部分,得到一个确切的面,”哈博解释说,“设想一下,每个U形边缘都有弯曲的倾向,当你设法把这些U形连在一起时,它们就弯了。这也是彩图所显示的。一个管子可以变成曲面,只要把它从边缘破开,它就可以在空间弯曲。”

细胞生物学信号也可能遵循拓扑原理

2006年,中德科研人员同时在单细胞内检测跟踪上百个蛋白质,研究它们在时间和空间上的网络排列,揭示这幅蛋白质“拓扑图”到底与哪种细胞功能有关,这标志着细胞生物学步入了拓扑研究时代。在昨天出版的国际权威学刊《自然·生物技术(Nature·Biotechnology)》封面上,刊登了中科院上海生命科学院计算生物学研究所与德国马格德堡大学等知名研究机构合作的论文《应用多维自动荧光显微技术分析蛋白质的拓扑结构和功能》。

系统生物学的拓扑特性?

系统生物学是研究一个生物系统中所有组成成份的构成,以及在特定条件下这些组分间的相互作用关系的学科。生物系统内的组分之间呈现的高度网络特性使得一个生物系统可以被描述为一个抽象简化的网络,可以通过研究这个网络的性质来探究生物系统的功能和性质。

在生物网络的研究中,一个非常重要的问题就是,生物网络的结构与其功能之间会有什么样的联系。这包含两个方面:一是特定的拓扑结构能使生物网络具有什么样的功能,二是特定的功能需要生物网络具有什么样的拓扑结构。对第一个问题,在本文里,我们研究了一类具有特定拓扑结构的生物网络-无抑制作用的单底物单产物(SSN)网络模块的正平衡点的存在性及稳定性;对第二个问题,我们研究了生物网络具有完全适应性功能需要的拓扑结构。

SSN网络,即无抑制反应的单底物单产物生物网络,是最近提出的一个具有基本拓扑结构的生化网络模块。所谓抑制反应是指一个反应物的增多会抑制另一反应物的增多。SSN网络模块中所有的反应均非抑制反应(即无抑制反应),且只有一个底物和一个产物(即单底物单产物)。这类具有基本拓扑结构的网络模块在实际生物系统中极其常见,因而研究它的性质,尤其是其平衡点的存在性及稳定性性质,对揭开整个网络的性质非常重要。前人的结果已经证明,在Hill机制下,SSN网络模块最多只有一个正的平衡点。在本文里,我们首先研究了SSN网络模块在Hill机制下的正平衡点的稳定性,其次研究了其在质量作用定律下正平衡点的存在唯一性及稳定性。
