此前，有针对美国职业橄榄球运动员的寿命研究显示，相对于一般人群，其死亡率较低，但这些研究的结果可能易受选择偏差的影响。近期，一项发表在杂志JAMA上的研究评估了参与职业美式足球与退休死亡风险之间的关系。此项研究为回顾性队列研究，涉及3812名退休的美国国家橄榄球联盟（NFL）球员，这些球员在1982年至1992年期间在NFL中首次亮相，包括临时雇佣的常规NFL球员（n = 2933）和NFL“替补

近期，一项发表在杂志JAMA上的研究评估了参与职业美式足球与退休死亡风险之间的关系。此项研究为回顾性队列研究，涉及3812名退休的美国国家橄榄球联盟（NFL）球员，这些球员在1982年至1992年期间在NFL中首次亮相，包括临时雇佣的常规NFL球员（n = 2933）和NFL“替补球员”（n = 879），研究随访至2016年12月31日结束。此项研究的主要结果是在2016年12月31日之前的全因死亡率。估计Cox比例风险模型以比较从22岁至死亡（或检查）的年数，根据出生年份、体重指数、身高和球场的位置调整。根据国家死亡数和网络来源搜索确定关于球员死亡和死亡原因的信息。

最终，在此项研究中共纳入的3812名男性中，NFL活动平均年龄为23.4 [1.5]岁，有2933名职业NFL球员（NFL的中位数，5个季度[IQR}，2-8] ；中位随访时间为30年[IQR，27-33]）；879名替补球员（NFL的中位数，1个赛季[IQR，1-1]；中位随访31年[IQR，30-33]） 。


随访结束时，144名美式足球运动员（4.9％）和37名替补球员（4.2％）已经死亡（调整后的绝对风险差异为1.0％[95％CI，-0.7％至2.7％]; P = 0.25 ）。美式橄榄球运动员调整的死亡风险比率为1.38（95％可信区间为0.95-1.99; P = 0.09）。在职业NFL球员中，最常见的死亡原因是心脏代谢疾病（n = 51; 35.4％）、运输伤害（n = 20; 13.9％）、无意伤害（n = 15; 10.4％）和肿瘤（n = 15; 10.4％）。在NFL替补球员中，导致死亡的主要原因是心脏代谢疾病（n = 19; 51.4％）、自我伤害和人际暴力（n = 5; 13.5％）以及肿瘤（n = 4; 10.8％）。
