为了克服传统上与胰岛移植有关的挑战,包括缺乏供体器官、需要免疫抑制药物阻止免疫系统排斥移植的细胞,以及随着时间推移逐渐失去胰岛功能,Andrew Schally及其同事为胰岛开发了一种半透性腔室系统,它能挡住来自宿主免疫系统的细胞,并且让氧输送到移植体中。这组作者把这个装置植入了一名63岁男性病人的腹腔,该病人患有1型糖尿病,完全缺乏胰岛素,然后他们在10个月时间里评估了该装置的功能和稳定性。
