点头综合征(NS)是一种以5-15岁儿童为主要发病人群的、灾难性的、病因不明的癫痫性疾病。点头是与其它形式的癫痫的区别特征。这种疾病的其它特征表现为智力和身体发育迟缓。患此病的许多儿童死于火灾或溺水。最近，研究表明NS是盘尾丝虫病相关癫痫(OAE)的表型表现之一。尽管癫痫和盘尾丝虫病之间有很强的流行病学联系，但其病因尚不清楚。在乌干达北部河流地区使用伊佛霉素(CDTi)和幼虫杀虫剂实施了一年两次的社区指导治疗后，未发生新的NS病例，而在南苏丹的盘尾丝虫病流行地区，因CDTi计划受阻，新的病例继续出现。本研究旨在评估一年两次的CDTi对降低南苏丹盘尾丝虫病流行地区NS/OAE发病率的潜在影响。

研究人员选择孟德里县和马里迪县的一些盘尾丝虫病流行且癫痫发病率很高的村庄进行干预前挨家挨户人口调查。通过有效的问卷调查，由社区研究助理对整个村庄疑似癫痫病例进行筛查。由经过培训的临床人员或医生对可疑病例将进行面谈和检查，他们将对癫痫进行确诊和排除。在农村实施每一年两次CDTi，并建立癫痫监测系统。通过实施癫痫盘尾丝虫病认识活动，我们期望对符合条件的个人获得90%的CDTi覆盖率。在基线调查两年后重复进行逐户调查，比较一年两次CDTi前后NS/OAE的发生率。

研究是首次以人群为基础评估一年两次CDTi对降低NS/OAE发病率的影响的研究。如果研究表明有减少疾病发生率的效果，预计此发现将促使盘尾丝虫病流行地区的社区参与CDTi，并将鼓励决策者、资助者和其他利益攸关方加大消除盘尾丝虫病的努力。
