Larin说。“实验表明,新生哺乳动物的心脏组织可以完全再生,但随着年龄的增长,这种再生能力会减弱。马丁的团队正在研究如何以一种刺激成人心脏组织自我修复的方式来操纵这些分子通路。”

研究人员求助于在Larin实验室开发的OCE技术,看看它是否有助于观察实验疗法在小鼠模型中的作用。OCE是基于生物医学成像技术的光学相干断层成像(OCT),它可以提供高分辨率的组织显微组织图像。然而,OCE并没有获得结构信息,而是使用OCT的原理来创建组织力学的高分辨率图。

OCE是观察小鼠心脏组织机制的理想方法,因为它有必要的分辨率来检测健康和疤痕组织之间的边界是否会对治疗产生反应。虽然其他的成像方式,如MRI或超声波可以用来检查组织力学,但它们更适合于大面积的组织,而不是一颗小而脆弱的老鼠心脏。

使用OCE要求在组织中引入机械波。就像掉进水中的石头会引起一种波浪的图案,暴露在一个小机械力上的组织会呈现出一种特定的传播模式。研究人员通过分析波浪的速度或空间特征,开发出分析模型来重建组织的力学性能。
