该研究是一项系统回顾和荟萃分析研究。研究者对PubMed和Cochrane临床对照试验中心注册数据库进行了检索，并确定了符合条件的四个随机临床对照试验（RCT），这四个实验都比较了短期（7-8天）与长期（10-15天）抗生素治疗方案对VAP治疗效果的研究。研究的主要终点包括患者的死亡率，无抗生素日数，临床和细菌学复发率；次要终点则包括无机械通气时间、机械通气时间、及其在ICU内的停留时间。

该研究的主要结果为：所有纳入研究的四个RCT均包含有患者的死亡率数据；但在四个试验中分别只有三个、和两个RCT包含有患者病情复发、及无抗生素日的数据。研究发现：长、短疗程组患者的死亡率无显著性差异；但短疗程组的无抗生素日合并加权均数较长疗程组增加了3.40天。虽然长疗程组的复发率有明显下降趋势，但其与短疗程组相比也无显著性差异。此外，2组间的其余终点事件比较，均未发现显著性差异。对相关数据进行的敏感性分析也得到了与上述类似的结果。

该研究结果显示：短程抗生素治疗与VAP患者更多的无抗生素日数相关。长疗程患者的复发率有明显降低趋势，但其与短疗程者在死亡率和复发率方面并无显著性差异。作者认为，该研究中所观察到的复发率下降趋势，主要与纳入研究的四个RCT中的一个有关；由于该RCT中所观察到的复发主要是微生物学复发，而非临床复发，所以，有必要进行更多的研究，以澄清有关复发率下降的问题。
