Science: 细菌群体间能协调“分时用餐”

近日,有研究者报道了两种不同的枯草芽孢杆菌群体能相互交流、相互协同他们的动态生长,并处于一种营养分段共享模式,相关研究发表在Science杂志上。

生物系统会经常面临营养匮乏的问题,在工程系统中解决它的一个策略就是营养分段模式即使用者轮流消耗有限的营养资源。这一机制需要相互竞争的两个系统在时间尺度和动力学尺度上不断切换它们的状态。总得来说,这样的协同是来自于一个机体内不同的功能单元比如说细胞协同完成以实现机体的行为。一个种群内的细菌可通过多种机制如群体感应(quorum sensing)、离子通道介导的细胞间电子信号来相互沟通/协同彼此。然而,我们并不知道不同的细菌群体之间能否做为一个功能单元来相互协同,也就是上述细胞与细胞之间的相互作是否在不同的群体之间也存在。



近日,有研究者报道了两种不同的枯草芽孢杆菌群体能相互交流、相互协同他们的动态生长,并处于一种营养分段共享模式,相关研究发表在Science杂志上。具体来说,这两种群体之间通过电子信号,将它们的动态生长协同到一个模式中。研究者利用数学建模发现了这两种不同的细菌群体可以从同相位振荡切换到反相位振荡,并循环往复。这就会形成刚刚所说的营养分段共享模式(nutrient time-sharing),它们轮流消耗营养成分,通过time-sharing机制,不同的生物群体能够协同它们的行为,来解决营养竞争的问题。
