抗菌药管理方案（ASPs）改善了抗菌药处方。73%的美国医院拥有不足200张床位。小医院（＜200张床位）与大医院相比，抗菌药处方率相似，但大部分小医院缺乏满足美国疾病预防控制中心（CDC）核心要素的ASPs。所有医院，无论大小，联合委员会均要求其具有ASPs，Medicare和Medicaid服务中心也提出了类似要求。很少有研究描述过小医院中ASPs的成功实施情况。研究者描述了小医院在建立抗菌药管理小组、获得恰当的抗菌药处方指标、实施抗菌药管理干预、获得财政资源以及使用微生物实验室时经常遇到的障碍。研究者为满足设备和通常可获取的资源需求，提出了制定管理活动的可能解决办法。
