纽卡斯尔大学的研究人员已经宣布，他们已经设法3D打印角膜，即人眼最外面的部分。目前，全球有1000万人需要手术来预防沙眼等疾病引起的角膜失明。最重要的是，由于事故或疾病导致的角膜疤痕让近500万人完全失明，现在，这种生产角膜的高科技方法可以结束这一切。

它通过从健康捐献者的角膜获取干细胞并将其与凝胶混合在一起，创造了研究人员认为的“生物墨水”，这种独特凝胶，海藻酸盐和胶原蛋白的组合，保持干细胞的活力，生产足够坚硬的材料以保持其形状，但足够柔软以从3D打印机的喷嘴挤出。

为了为特定人员定制角膜，科学家能够在创建符合个体大小和形状的角膜之前扫描患者的眼睛。但是，目前这种技术还没有准备好用于大规模使用，这种3D打印角膜现在将不得不进行进一步的测试，可能要用几年时间才能将它们用于移植。
